A little while ago we read a book about forts and many of the students had not made a fort before, so we decided to make a fort for Fun Friday. Ms. Krenek had a friend come in and play the guitar for us too while we were inside of our fort. We sang a lot of our favorite songs and learned a few new songs.
Life and Science Museum
The Life and Science Museum was a lot of fun and a great learning experience. We especially loved seeing all of the animals at the museum, checking out the butterfly exhibit, and exploring the weather and block exhibits.

Go Garden, Go!
We have really enjoyed working hands-on in our garden the past few months. We have learned so much. We’ve planted spinach seeds, dug in the dirt, found and observed worms, seen plants grow over time, put mulch around our garden bed, picked weeds, sorted leaves and seeds, and much much more.

Science Fair
We did our very own class science fair project using the scientific method. We connected our science fair project to one of our poems we had learned in literacy: Hickory Dickory Dock. We wanted to see which string would swing back and forth more times in 15 seconds – long, medium, or short. In our hypothesis, most of us thought that the longer string would swing back and forth more times in 15 seconds, but after conducting our experiment, we concluded that the shorter string swung back and forth more times.

A Scientist Comes to Visit!
During the month of March we had a science focus month at school. One way that we chose to celebrate science was to have a scientist come and visit us at school. We were very excited to have Dr. Parker come and visit us from Duke. Check out these pictures:
In the first picture you can see the paper that Dr. Parker set on fire. The regular paper burned slowly, but the special blue paper disappeared quickly! In the second picture, you can see the materials that Dr. Parker used to do the experiment with the egg. (We saw the color of the egg change from clear to white!) In the third picture, you can see the trap that Dr. Parker showed us. It is used to trap animals so that scientists can study them. In the last picture, you can see what happened when the dry ice was placed in the water!
Thank you Dr. Parker for coming to visit us! We wrote you a thank you note. (Remember . . . you can click on the image to make it larger.)
We also made illustrations of what we learned when you came to visit. Check out all of the details!

Let’s Measure
We have been working on a unit called Compare and Measure. In this unit we are measuring ourselves and objects around us. We are measuring with “measuring tape” (similar to cash register paper) as well as with other units of measure such as unifix cubes and spools.
Here you can see an activity that we did with measuring tape. We wanted to see which objects were the longest in our classroom. First, each of us predicted which object would be the longest in the room (door, board, teacher, desk, table, or bookshelf). Next, in teams we measured 6 objects with measuring tape. Then, as a class we put the measuring tape in order from longest to shortest. Last, we checked our predictions against our findings. Can you figure out which object was the longest?

Working Together
Working together in a positive way is a very valuable skill to have in life. In Kindergarten, we work on this skill every day. You already saw how we worked together on our Shape Posters (scroll down to see pictures). Now you can see us working together during “Morning Work” time! (We do “Morning Work” such as puzzles, blocks, math games, literacy games, etc. before the school bell rings in the morning.)

The Cat in the Hat!
We had a very special guest come to our classroom! The Cat in the Hat came and read some Dr. Seuss books to us to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ Birthday.

Shape Posters
We are learning about shapes in math right now. Here are some of the things we are learning:
- the names of 2-D shapes (i.e. circle, rectangle, rhombus, hexagon)
- the names of 3-D shapes (i.e. sphere, cube, rectangular prism, pyramid)
- the number of sides each shape has
- the number of corners each shape has
- which shapes have straight lines and which have curved lines
Here you can see us working together in teams to make a Shape Poster!
